Alpaca Q&A

Do alpacas really spit?

Yes.  Alpacas will spit at each other at feeding time or if someone gets too close to one of their cria.

How many babies do alpacas have?

Alpacas give birth to a single baby, which is called a cria.  Twins are very rare.

How long is an alpaca pregnant?

11 1/2 months.

Can you ride alpaca?

No. Alpacas are not big enough to carry the weight of a person.

Can you eat alpacas?

In South American countries like Peru, Chile and Bolivia alpaca meat is very common.  There are also a few breeders in the US that have started to offer alpaca meat for sale.

What are their personalities like?

Their personalities are a lot like cats. Generally they’re curious, stay just out of reach and do not like to be cuddled.

They are a herding animal and in that way more like cows… they live in groups, build strong relationships with each other and are interested in people from a distance.

Why should I wear alpaca fiber instead of wool?

Alpaca fiber is similar to wool but often warmer and lighter.  Alpaca does not have lanolin like sheep’s wool so people who are allergic to wool can usually wear alpaca.

How often are alpacas sheared?

Once per year, in the spring.  Please let us know if you would like to help out on shearing day.

What do alpacas eat?

Grass hay and alfalfa.
